Economist Peter Bacon has said that the Government’s failure to meet recycling targets is fuelling Ireland’s waste management crisis.

Mr Bacon’s comments are contained in a report which predicts that the waste problem will worsen unless more landfill space is created.

The report criticised the lack of taxes and incentives to encourage recycling and the failure to enforce existing legislation.

It said Ireland is nowhere near the Government’s 45% target rate of recycling for household and industrial waste.
