The alternative coalition is dismissing this morning's opinion poll showing a surge in support for Fianna Fail at the expense of the opposition.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Labour leader Pat Rabbitte were asked about the findings at a press conference today encouraging their supporters to transfer votes between the two parties.

Mr Kenny said the only poll that mattered was Thursday's vote and the electorate had a simple choice between change and five more years of Fianna Fáil.

Labour leader Pat Rabbitte, meanwhile, said the outgoing Government was "tired, incompetent and ineffective" and the election was a long way from over.
