A mother who was pregnant with a baby suffering from a fatal foetal abnormality has claimed she was advised to travel to Britain to undergo the first part of a termination.
The woman who has become known as "Sarah" has said she was also told by a Consultant here to travel home afterwards and fake a miscarriage.
Commenting on the issue, former Master of the Rotunda, Sam Coulter Smith, said we needed to find a better way of dealing with mothers who find themselves in this very traumatic situation.
“Patients, families need the confidence to know that regardless of what choices they make they can return to Ireland.
“As long as the law stays as it stands they can go abroad to have a termination and can return to Ireland and be confident that they can access services knowing that they won’t be stigmatised.
“That in this very difficult situation for them that they won’t be judged and won’t be stigmatised in this situation and they will have access to services.”
