Hikers will raise more than €400,000 when they scale Ireland’s highest mountains during one weekend this summer.
Focus Ireland’s Four Peaks Challenge will feature Carrauntoohil in Co Kerry, Co Mayo’s Mweelrea, Slieve Donard in Co Down and Co Wicklow’s Lugnaquilla.
This is the ninth year of the all-island event. Last year a total of 75 teams raised €375,000.
Focus Ireland has pledged in its latest strategy to provide one home every day until 2010 through services and housing.
Focus Ireland co-ordinator Sinead Price said: “Events such as the Four Peaks Challenge on June 6-8 are vital to help people find a place they can call home and prevent many others from becoming homeless in the first place.”
Each team, which can comprise of between three and five members, must raise a minimum of €4,500 in sponsorship before taking part in the Challenge.
Launching details of the Challenge, Government TD Barry Andrews said today: “It’s a great chance for people to have a good time while also helping a great cause.”
Focus Ireland’s services helped more than 5,000 people last year in Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Sligo.
