A technical examination is due to be carried out on a car believed to have been involved in yesterday's cross-border car-jackings.

The car was recovered in Rathfarnam in south Dublin yesterday evening.

Gardaí believed the car which was recovered is connected to the series of incidents on both sides of the border, but say tests must be carried out to verify this.

Technical and forensic examinations will begin later this morning in a bid to link the detained car and the car jackings.

Gardaí are still hunting the three-man gang involved in the incidents.

Seven vehicles were hijacked and several people left injured and traumatised as a result of the rampage which began in the early hours of Thursday morning in Newcastle, Co. Down.

At one stage, the gang put a noose around the neck of a motorist.

An 81-year-old woman received serious leg injuries and had to be hospitalised after she was pulled from her car.
