A car bomb exploded in the Iraqi capital as the Baghdad governor’s convoy was passing by, the Interior Ministry said.

Governor Ali al-Haidri survived the apparent assassination attempt in west Baghdad, said ministry spokesman Col Adnan Abdel Rahman.

He said he had no immediate information about casualties.

Gunmen opened fire on the convoy seconds before the explosion in the Hay al-Adel neighbourhood, Rahman said.

Witnesses said several bloodied bodies were lying on the road at the scene of the attack.
