Belfast postmen stall work for murdered colleague

Postal workers in Belfast have refused to collect or deliver mail today as a show of respect to the young Catholic postman who was shot dead by the UDA yesterday.

He was murdered as he arrived for work at a postal sorting office in the loyalist Rathcoole estate in north Belfast. Colleagues and members of the Communication Workers Union say they will not make deliveries today or tomorrow in memory of the 20-year-old father of one.

Some believe they should not return to normal working until after the man’s funeral this week.

Security forces were on high alert last night in the wake of the attack, but there were no immediate signs of reprisal attacks by republicans.

The Taoiseach has called on the North’s Police Service to round up loyalist gang leaders, saying not enough arrests have been made during recent violence in north Belfast.
