Union representatives are meeting management at Aviva this morning after the company revealed it is carrying out a review of its business here.

It has prompted concerns about the future for hundreds of employees, but in a statement Aviva has said it is too early to speculate on what the outcome will be.

The company said it is committed to Ireland and is considering various options to ensure it has a sustainable and competitive business.

Earlier this year it decided to move its holding company for its European headquarters from Dublin to London.

The Unite union represents more than half of the Aviva workers.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has said she is hopeful that the maximum number of jobs can be saved at Aviva.

Joan Burton has said she hopes workers' livelihoods will be maintained.

Ms Burton said: "My thoughts are with the workers and their families. I don't at this point in time know very much more, but bear in mind that insurance and financial markets companies are globalised and my understanding is that the company is reviewing its operations in a global context.

"We have some of the best people in Ireland, in terms of financial services. I am sure in the global review factors like that will be taken into account."
