A suspected thief has modelled for a police recruitment poster in Germany.

The man is one of four people who appeared on the advertisement in full police uniform to encourage more people to sign up to the force.

Posters appeared on buses and in underground stations across Hamburg which led to the suspected thief being recognised by a man who accused him of stealing.

Following the allegation, Hamburg police spokesman Mirko Streiber said the posters are now "being scrapped and the search for a new model is underway.”

The suspected thief denies the charges against him.
