Farmers have been urged to spend today checking all 13 million sheep, pigs and cattle in Ireland for signs of foot and mouth disease.
The drastic measure was called for by farming leaders to isolate any animals which may be showing symptoms of the dreaded virus.
Irish Farmers' Association president Tom Parlon said he believes we can emerge from this crisis unscathed if we all pull together.
"I am inclined to be an optimist and I will continue to be optimistic about this. I think we can't allow the fact that it is on the island of Ireland to deter our determination. I believe, if we continue with the same determination we have shown, we can be successful," said Mr Parlon.
