The Government is not doing enough to promote employment at a time when massive job losses are being announced around the country, according to the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed.

The body was responding to news today that 500 jobs could be under threat at Aviva.

The insurance company, which employs around 2,000 people in Ireland, is said to be drawing up a restructuring plan.

Aviva has told Unite trade union that its internal review is ongoing and that the company is unwilling to comment on speculation about potential job losses.

A union spokesperson said it hopes to keep discussions going with the insurer but it remains very concerned about what its intentions are.

Brid O'Brien from the INOU more must be done to stimulate the jobs market and does not accept the argument that the Government's hands are tied.
