The inquiry into the shooting of John Carthy by armed gardaí has been adjourned for a third consecutive day due to a legal argument over the recalling of witnesses.

Lawyers for 36 gardaí involved in the inquiry are seeking to have several senior officers and Mr Carthy's psychiatrist recalled to answer further questions at the Barr Tribunal.

Justice Robert Barr is due to issue a ruling on the matter tomorrow.

The Barr Tribunal was established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Mr Carthy in Abbeylara, Co Longford, in April 2001.

Mr Carthy was shot dead by the Garda Emergency Response Unit following a 24-hour siege at his home.
