Australia 49 Fiji 3
Australia overcame a sluggish start to post an encouraging victory over a committed Fiji at Canberra Stadium.
Having led 14-3 after a competitive opening half, the hosts found their rhythm in attack to run in five second-half tries in what was a bruising encounter.
Digby Ioane and Kurtley Beale both bagged doubles in commanding individual displays, with Quade Cooper, Richard Brown and Drew Mitchell also finding the line while Matt Giteau kicked six from six with the boot.
Cooper continued his scintillating Super 14 form, laying on four of the Wallabies’ seven tries, while veteran lock Nathan Sharpe and Rocky Elsom were the pick of the forward pack.
A potentially serious knee injury to prop Ben Alexander and an ankle injury to Adam Ashley-Cooper soured the victory, with both now doubts for next weekend’s clash against England in Perth.
It was a shaky start from the Wallabies with Beale producing a knock-on in the second minute of the contest to put his side under immense pressure.
The visitors were unable to capitalise but continued to ask serious questions of the hosts as veteran winger Sireli Bobo won the race to a clever chip kick only to fumble the ball with the line in sight.
Beale, making his run-on debut for the Wallabies, made up for his slow start when he ran onto a pinpoint 20-metre pass from Cooper to open his side’s account in the 12th minute.
Giteau added the extras to hand the Wallabies an early 7-0 advantage.
The hosts stayed on the attack but were unable to extend their lead despite close calls from Rob Horne and Elsom.
The visitors opened their account with a Taniela Rawaqa penalty goal in the 28th minute to cut the deficit to 7-3, but the Wallabies had the final say of the half when Brown finished off a brilliant passage of play.
Cooper delivered a beautiful short ball for Horne who exploded into a gap and sprinted 40m before finding Ashley-Cooper who sent the number eight over adjacent to the posts.
Giteau was shaken up after he was crudely taken out off the ball in the lead up to the try, leaving Cooper to add the extras for a 14-3 lead at the break.
Cooper increased the lead four minutes in to the second period when he cruised over untouched after some clever lead-up work from Sharpe and Elsom.
Ioane put the contest beyond doubt in the 51st minute when he swooped on a loose ball from halfway and stepped past three defenders to score a brilliant individual try.
Things went from bad to worse for Fiji soon after when half-back Emosi Vucago was sin-binned for a professional foul.
The undermanned visitors defended grimly but were unable to keep replacement winger Drew Mitchell who cruised over untouched off a short ball from Cooper after a darting run from Giteau who converted for 35-3.
Fittingly, Ioane and Beale both sealed their doubles late in the clash to complete the romp.
