Nigel Twiston-Davies reports Imperial Commander on course to return to action in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on November 24 following his recent workout at Chepstow.
The 11-year-old lifted this prize in 2010 after being just touched off by Kauto Star a year earlier.
The 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero has been absent since being pulled up when attempting to defend his crown in 2011.
However, he showed he was on the way back when working two miles in the hands of Aidan Coleman with his new stablemate Ransom Note, a Group Two winner on the Flat for Charlie Hills, at the Welsh venue on Saturday.
"Imperial Commander is on course for the Betfair Chase at Haydock," said Naunton-based Twiston-Davies.
"He went very nicely at the weekend - it was only a canter round - but he did it very nicely so that was all right.
"We sent him to Chepstow just keep him interested and on his toes and obviously to increase his fitness and things like that - we want to get him to the race at 100%.
"His clash with Kauto Star in 2009 was quite a sad day for us because we thought we had won when we hadn't, but we got our revenge in the Gold Cup that season."
