The European Parliament has adopted new measures aimed at freezing the assets of 27 individuals and organisations which the US Government has claimed are involved in international terrorism.

The measures will be introduced on Monday, provided they are passed by a unanimous vote.

However, Irish MEP Patricia McKenna has expressed concern that the crackdown on alleged terrorist funding could affect ordinary, innocent citizens.

She slammed the parliament for adopting the measures without proper debate about the ramifications for European civil liberties.
