ISPCC concerned about availability of drugs to children

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has expressed concern about the availability of drugs to schoolchildren.

The society said today that more than 6,500 school-goers had contacted its drugs prevention programme in the past three years.

ISPCC chief executive Paul Gilligan said drugs were an unavoidable aspect of children's lives and needed to be tackled by both schools and parents.

"All children are going to come in contact with drugs and alcohol in the Ireland of today," he said.

"The parents and the education system need to be aware of that and need to integrate drugs prevention into the day-to-day issue of education and parenting."
