The High Court will today hear more about punishments handed down to convicted drug smuggler John Gilligan, for an alleged assault on a prison officer in Portlaoise jail.

Gilligan began legal proceedings on Tuesday to seek a judicial review of the decision by the prison governor, after he allegedly assaulted, abused and threatened the officer.

It is claimed he launched the attack after the officer refused to open the prison shop on March 25.

Since the alleged incident, Gilligan has been held in the bunker section of the prison, where he will remain for two months.

He has also had visitation rights withdrawn.
