Nationalists and the RUC are rowing following the overnight rioting in Portadown, which left 57 police officers injured.

The violence flared after a Junior Orange Order parade close to the Garvaghy Road.

According to the RUC, acid, petrol bombs and fireworks were used during the disturbances, which at times descended into hand-to-hand fighting.

The march was heavily policed, with army back up and a large metal barrier placed across the road.

The RUC say the parade itself passed off without incident but that groups of men and youths confronted officers on public order duty as they were withdrawing.

The RUC say once again its members were placed in a life-threatening situation.

However, Sinn Fein say once again the police response was heavy handed with at least a dozen plastic bullets fired.

The party also says the fighting was provoked by loyalists breaking parade restrictions.
