Shatter wants abortion legislation to go further
The Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has said the new Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill does not go far enough.
The Minister said he hopes to be part of a Government that addresses the issue of abortions for women who are the victims of rape or who have been told their baby has a fatal foetal abnormality.
Mr Shatter said these issues will "inevitably" have to be addressed through a referendum at some date in the future.
Minister Shatter said he is proud to be part of a Government that introduced the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.
However, he has told the Ray D'Arcy show on Today FM that it does not go far enough.
He said: "It will unfortunately, and very sadly, be of no assistance to women who are the victims of rape unless they are suicidal.
"It will be of no assistance to women who have a pregnancy where there is a fatal foetal abnormality.
"I would hope to be part of an administration that at some date in the future addresses that issue."
