Residents at unofficial halting site appeal for running water to alleviate 'inhumane' conditions

Residents of an unofficial halting site in County Wicklow are appealing to the local council to supply them with running water.

The site on the Bray to Greystones Road has been badly affected by the recent storms and is now relying on a sole generator for heat.

The families living there want Wicklow County Council to supply them with utilities and replace their mobile homes.

However, the council claims it is prevented from erecting permanent structures as ownership of the land is unclear after a land swap with the local golf club.

Tom Moorehouse's family has lived on the halting site for 30 years, and he says the conditions are inhumane.

He said: "We have no proper heating, we have no proper electricity and we have no proper hot and cold water. When it comes to six or seven o'clock at night, you can't see out your window because it's so dark. We should have more lights outside.

"We have no way of washing ourselves, there is only cold water so we have to boil the kettle for hot water and I wash myself in a basin.

"That's no way to live."
