Five people narrowly escaped serious injury after they were pulled to safety from a burning building today.

Five people narrowly escaped serious injury after they were pulled to safety from a burning building today.

The blaze engulfed a shop on Church Road, in the East Wall area of north inner city Dublin, shortly after 3am.

The five – three men and two women – were trapped in the upper floor flat and were rescued by fire officers.

They were brought to the Mater Hospital in Dublin and treated for smoke inhalation.

Three fire brigade units and five ambulances attended the scene.

It is not known how the blaze started but gardaí said they are not treating it as suspicious.
