More than 50 jobs are to go at a shirt-manufacturing plant in Co Donegal.

Clubman Omega said it was closing down its factory in Carndonagh, Co Donegal, with the loss of 51 jobs, but said operations would continue at its second premises in the county, in Buncrana.

The company said the operation of two plants in Donegal could not be justified, but stressed its belief in a strong future for Clubman Omega.

Tánaiste Mary Harney has expressed her disappointment that 50 jobs are to be lost with the closure of the Clubman Omega shirt factory in Donegal.

Its factory in Carndonagh - in operation for over 17 years - is to shut, with production being consolidated at its Buncrana factory.

The company said it could no longer justify operating two plants.

Speaking after the announcement Harney said: "I know this company well and have visited them many times in the past.

"I know that the decision was taken very reluctantly and only after all other options had been explored. However, I do understand the market pressures that have made it necessary.

"I have spoken with the company this morning and they have confirmed to me their long-term commitment to maintaining a manufacturing base in Donegal.

"This will, I hope, provide important reassurance for the remaining workforce," she added.
