Govt to establish statutory rail safety commission

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan has announced plans to establish a rail safety commission on a full statutory basis next year.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan has announced plans to establish a rail safety commission on a full statutory basis next year.

Mr Brennan said he hoped to establish the commission, which would have wide-ranging powers of inspection and enforcement, before next July.

The minister is also planning to establish a railway council to consider issues relevant to rail safety and make recommendations to either the safety commission or the Department of Transport.
