A British Airways jumbo jet returned to New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport early today when an engine fire broke out shortly after take-off.

One of the four engines on the London-bound Boeing 747 ignited shortly after its 11pm departure yesterday, US time, said John McCarthy, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The plane landed safely and no one was injured, he said. The pilot extinguished the fire.

About 300 passengers were on Flight 116, which was heading to Heathrow airport, McCarthy said.

The passengers and crew are to take another flight to the UK later today.
