Iarnrod Eireann has announced rises in its student and commuter fares from Thursday next.

Increases of between £1 and £2.50 are being added to these tickets.

For example, a student return from Westport to Dublin will now cost £18.50, instead of £17.50, while a five day weekly commuter ticket for Mullingar to Dublin will now retail at £26.50, rather than £24.00.

A company spokesman said the fare increases were required in order to support the cost of its ongoing infrastructural investment programme.
