Savage welcomes underdog tag

Robbie Savage claims all the pressure will be on Chelsea to seal a place in the first FA Cup final at the new Wembley stadium.

Blackburn’s Welsh midfielder believes Rovers’ status as underdogs could help turn their dreams of winning the semi-final into reality.

Savage told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I think people within the game want to see a Chelsea versus Manchester United final but we actually think it would be great to see Blackburn versus Watford at the new Wembley!

“Chelsea will obviously start the semi-final as favourites, but it’s a one-off game at Old Trafford, so who knows what could happen?

“If we defend well and Brad (Friedel) plays well then we are perfectly capable of nicking one at the other end with players like Benni McCarthy in the team.

“No-one expected Cameroon to beat Argentina at the World Cup in 1990, and who would have predicted Wrexham beating Arsenal in the FA Cup when Mickey Thomas scored the winner?

“The history books are full of shocks like that and we’ve got to believe we can produce another.

“Most of the country will want us to win because we are the underdogs. At the end of the day, there’s no pressure on us because no-one’s expecting us to win.

“All the pressure is on Chelsea because they’re expected to reach the final.”

Savage broke his leg against Watford in January but could return in time for the end of the season.
