Saints and Pompey level at break

Southampton 1 Portsmouth 1

Southampton 1 Portsmout 1

Southampton took just 12 minutes to find themselves in double misery yet again as centre-back Andreas Jakobsson conceded an own goal to local rivals Portsmouth at St Mary’s and had to go off injured.

But within six minutes, Saints had turned the tide with Dexter Blackstock’s equaliser after a bad miss by James Beattie and it was Pompey who finished the first half a key man down after eight-goal Aiyegbeni Yakubu had to limp out of the game after a foul by Rory Delap.

With five changes in the side, Southampton probably had the slight edge in possession in the first 45 minutes, but Portsmouth, still to win away in the Barclays Premiership this season, looked dangerous on the break.
