Tucker lands the spoils at Newmarket

Tucker once again failed to get a clear passage at Newmarket today, but he had too many guns for his rivals when dropping down in class for the Richard Jackson plc Conditions Stakes.

David Elsworth’s colt was sent off the 4-5 favourite after getting within five lengths of Footstepsinthesand when 10th in the 2000 Guineas, although he was hampered when trying to make his run that day.

Richard Quinn had the son of Inchinor settled behind the early leaders Brecon Beacon and Subpoena but could not get through and was bumped when trying to make a move two furlongs out in the mile contest.

However, he challenged up the inside, leading half a furlong out before eventually beating Chrysander by a cosy length and a half.

It was Tucker’s third win from five starts, all at Newmarket and his trainer joked: “He must think this is the only racecourse in the country!

“He had a bad patch a few days before the Guineas and I felt he was a better horse today. He took a bump or two but won quite easily.

“There is a Listed race for three-year-olds at Goodwood next week which I might look at.”

Hanoona (5-2 favourite) looked a decent long-term prospect when landing the EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes on her debut.

After settling in mid-division, the Mick Channon-trained juvenile quickened through to lead in the final furlong running on to beat Bee Seventeen by three-quarters of a length.

Winning jockey Ted Durcan said: “She’s a lovely filly and will be better next year and over seven furlongs. The boss has always liked her.”

Sir Michael Stoute’s Dubai Venture had to survive a lengthy stewards’ inquiry before being confirmed the winner of the hospitality@sportsdays.co.uk Maiden Stakes.

Jamie Spencer had to go for a narrow gap between two horses, yet the evens favourite still won tidily by a length from Almanshood.

However, there was a sting in the tail for Spencer. He was handed a four-day ban (May 31, June 1-3) after being found guilty of careless riding.

The suspension means he will miss the Vodafone Oaks and Coronation Cup at Epsom.
