Another 125 jobs have been shed in Ireland, it emerged today, in a week blighted by lay-offs.

The temporary workers were made redundant from American-owned electronics firm SCI Ireland in Fermoy, Co Cork.

The firm said the move was in response to a downturn in demand and uncertainty in world markets following the terrorist attacks on America.

Human resources manager Cass Fitzpatrick said it was hoped that the workers would be taken back on when the markets picked up.

Workers were told of the losses on Monday but only emerged publicly today.

Meanwhile, 40 jobs have been lost at APW Galway.

The Galway-based firm, which makes components for the telecommunications industry, also pointed to the downturn in demand as the reason for making nearly a third of their 126 positions redundant.

Managers said the firm "deeply regretted" the announcement.

Yesterday more than 100 job losses were announced by cigarette company Imperial Tobacco, due to restructuring in its manufacturing operations.

The Cadena cigar plant will close in Tallow, Co Waterford, where 68 jobs will go, and the John Player and Sons’ cigarette factory in Dublin will move to the west of the city, resulting in a further 45 job losses.

Cork engineering firm Terex Aerials said it will close with the loss of 60 jobs.

The move comes as part of a wider restructuring programme by its US parent company, Terex Corporation.

The Cork plant is scheduled to close by the end of January 2002. Nearly 1,300 jobs are being shed in the firm worldwide.

A question mark hangs over the future of 80 jobs at the Tralee Beef and Lamb processing plant in Co Kerry.

Suppliers to the county’s only meat plant have been told the company has no money to pay them.
