The bodies of three children who were shot dead have been found in the basement of a burning home in Detroit, police said today.

A nine-year-old girl who was shot but survived was rushed to hospital where she was said to be in a critical condition.

Police believe the father, Anthony Bailey, 37, fled the scene on a bicycle after the blaze started last night. They urged residents to call the authorities if they saw him.

Spokesman Christopher Cole said Bailey had been raising the children and that he was in the middle of a divorce with their mother, who has not been seen for about a month. The dead youngsters were aged between one and nine.

Cole said it appeared the fire was started to cover up the crime, but added that the investigation had not been completed.
