The Government has issued warnings to people that they could face heavy penalties if caught with fireworks this weekend.

Large numbers of fireworks are expected to be brought in from the North ahead of Hallowe’en next Monday.

Minister for Justice Micheal McDowell says gardaí will be on the lookout for fireworks heading south in the next few days.

Mr McDowell said: "If you bring fireworks across the border in your car, you’re not merely committing an offence - you are also liable to forfeit your car, and people might remember this in future."
