Environment Minister John Gormley has denied reports that Irish beaches could be left without lifeguards this summer.

Environment Minister John Gormley has denied reports that Irish beaches could be left without lifeguards this summer.

Reports yesterday claimed the ban on public-sector recruitment was preventing councils from hiring seasonal lifeguards.

However, Mr Gormley said today that there was "no basis for that at all", adding that he did not know where the story had come from.
