Sives an injury doubt for Hoops

Shamrock Rovers travel to the Showgrounds to take on Sligo Rovers in tonight’s Airtricity League Premier Division clash, kick-off 7.45pm.

Rovers boss Michael O’Neill must, once again, plan without new midfield signing, Stephen O’Donnell as he is serving a suspension.

The Hoops have a strong squad to choose from with centre-half Craig Sives the only injury concern with a hamstring strain.

O’Neill said: “Games against Sligo are always ones we look forward to.

“The games between our two sides have been very tight in recent years, and they are as tough as games come. We have a slightly different squad now from last year, but are still expecting a tough challenge.

“There should also be a big crowd at the game, in both the home and away sections, so it has all the ingredients of being a great game.”

And O’Neill is hoping that Rovers will pick up where they left off in last week’s campaign-opener against Dundalk.

He added: “We were delighted to start the campaign with a win. We started a wee bit slow (last year), but I think that was down to the great start Dundalk had, along with our new lads bedding in. We went on to play some excellent football in the second half and we want to continue that in the Sligo game.”

Bit O’ Red boss Paul Cook has no injuries concerns ahead of the clash of the Rovers, although Joesph Ndo remains a doubt as he steps up his training after missing part of pre-season.

Rovers defender Gavin Peers said: “They are the biggest challenge really. Twigg is probably the most prolific striker in the league so I’m looking forward to it.”
