The 27-year-old man shot dead during a gangland-style attack in west Dublin last night has been named locally as well-known criminal John Daly.

Mr Daly hit the headlines earlier this year when he telephoned Joe Duffy's Liveline show from his prison cell using a smuggled mobile phone.

The incident prompted a crackdown on the smuggling of phones and other items into Ireland's prisons.

Mr Daly was released during the summer after serving a sentence for armed robbery.

He was sitting in a car on Cloonlara Drive in Finglas just before 2am this morning when he was shot a number of times.

He died a short time later at the Mater Hospital.
