Calls for new St Patrick's Day

The Taoiseach is being asked to officially postpone St Patrick's Day.

The Taoiseach is being asked to officially postpone St Patrick's Day.

The organisers of the Shamrock Festival in Navan have written to Bertie Ahern to ask him to formally nominate another date later in the year as the national holiday.

The foot and mouth scare has caused celebrations all over the country to be postponed.

It is hoped that by organising another date as the new St Patrick's Day, re-arranged events can be co-ordinated to maximise tourism benefits.
