Charity hoping to make wishes come true with fundraising day

The Make-A-Wish charity is appealing to the public for their support, with its national fundraiser today.

Make-A-Wish helps make dreams come true for children living with a life-threatening medical condition.

Since 1992, the organisation has granted wishes for more than 1,500 children.

Wristbands in support of the charity are being sold across the country today, with the aim of raising €100,000.

Donations can also be made online or by texting MAKEAWISH to 50300.

Some of the wishes requested by children on this year’s waiting list include “I Wish to Have a Garden Den”, “I Wish to Go to Meet the Munster Rugby Team” , “I Wish to go to Discovery Cove”, “I Wish to Meet Princess Aurora”.

Amelia Deane, 9, from Co Meath who is living with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia had her special wish granted earlier this year thanks to Make-A-Wish.

Amelia, who has a passion for baking, wished to meet the star of “Cake Boss”, an American reality TV series featuring Buddy Valastro and his family in their everyday life of running a bakery.

Susan O’Dwyer, CEO of Make-A-Wish, said that they need donations to help kids have fun.

"Last year we were very fortunate, we granted a 60% increase in the number of wishes, we granted 210 wishes," she said.

"This year, due to current funding, we are planning on granting 150 wishes.

"Currently though we have just over 180 children on our list waiting to have their wishes granted."
