Government 'sailing close to the wind' with online political ads, says James Lawless

A Fianna Fáil TD has said the Government is 'sailing close to the wind' with its new strategic communications unit.

James Lawless says some of the videos being produced would be illegal advertising if they were on radio or TV.

He is bringing forward a bill that would force any online political ads to show who paid for them.

Deputy Lawless says the Taoiseach has gone too far with this strategic communications unit, and this bill would address the problem.

He said: "We haven't yet seen any Independent Ministers feature in the ads which I think is interesting.

"I think it would certainly put the onus on (the Government) to stay within the definition of what is political advertising."
