South East rail lines to remain in operation

The Waterford-based Rail User's Alliance says it has received assurances from two Government ministers that lines in the South East will not be closed.

The Waterford-based Rail User's Alliance says it has received assurances from two Government ministers that lines in the South East will not be closed.

It follows a meeting this week with Environment and Transport Ministers, Martin Cullen and Seamus Brennan, after reports that some services were to be axed.

The Alliance, of mainly business interests, were also told Iarnrod Eireann will no longer be the sole train operator.

President of Waterford Chamber of Commerce, Frank O'Donoghue, says freight customers are demanding choice in how to ship their goods around.

"They want more freedom, better service on the rails and if Iarnrod Eireann are not prepared to play ball and do it then we want somebody else to do it. Minister Brennan was very amenable to doing that."
