It is reported this morning that the Government is preparing to back Aer Lingus management in a key vote over Shannon to Heathrow flights.

Officials have said that nothing will be done to undermine the position of Chief Executive Dermot Mannion and the Chairman John Sharman at an EGM of the airline's shareholders meeting in October.

The meeting has been forced by Ryanair which controls up to 30% of the company.

Ministers are due to hold their first formal discussions on the saga when the Cabinet returns from its summer break this week.
