Gardaí in Clare have arrested a man following an air rage incident in which passengers held a man on the floor of a plane until the flight landed.

The man was detained after a transatlantic flight from Washinton to Vienna with 186 passengers on board was forced to divert to Shannon Airport this morning.

A 32-year-old Austrian national is being quizzed by gardaí following this morning's incident.

It is understood that passengers had to restrain a man who became volatile during the Austrian Airlines flight from Washingon to Vienna.

The pilot diverted to Shannon while a number of passengers held the 32-year-old on the floor until the plane landed just before 7am.

Gardaí and the emergency services were at the scene and the Austrian national was arrested and taken to Shannon garda station.

There were no injuries during the incident and gardaí are currently taking statments from all other passengers on board the flight.
