Connacht-Ulster MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon has welcomed comments by Minister Brian Cowen which support the call for the inclusion of a reference to God in the European Constitution.

Ms Scallon said its now up to the Government to call for the inclusion of Ireland's christian heritage, which would represent no threat to Europe in the proposed treaty.

While she still has major reservations about other aspects of the Draft Constitution, the independent MEP maintains the inclusion of a reference to God stands paramount.
