Prison officer seriously injured in knife attack by inmate

A prison officer has been seriously injured in a knife attack at Castlerea Prison in County Roscommon.

A prison officer has been seriously injured in a knife attack at Castlerea Prison in County Roscommon.

The officer, who is in his 40s, was rushed to hospital after being slashed with a blade by a prisoner.

It is understood he sustained extensive injuries to his head, ear and neck. Gardaí are investigating the incident.
