Dave Mulcahy hit the only goal of the night to earn Waterford an eighth place finish - but cup finalists Drogheda went home happy as well as Cork winning the league guarantees them a UEFA Cup spot.

Chances were at a premium in a dour first half, the only real highlight was a penalty miss by Blues on 32 minutes. Gary Rogers, one of six changes in the Drogheda side, was harshly adjudged to have impeded Kevin Waters.

But Paul Crowley’s over-hit spot kick clipped the bar on its way over the top. Blues were the better side in the second half and finally struck for the winner on 77 minutes. Kevin Waters whipped over a super cross from the right and skipper Mulcahy stole in at the back post to head home.
