Sinn Fein ask Sky to release FAI from contract

A move by Sky TV to resolve the issue of Ireland’s home-international soccer matches could avert a costly legal battle, according to Sinn Fein.

A move by Sky TV to resolve the issue of Ireland’s home-international soccer matches could avert a costly legal battle, according to Sinn Fein.

The party is averse to the Government’s ‘legal action’ contingency plan. The party’s spokesperson on communications and the media, Sean Crowe, says that such a battle would only benefit the lawyers.

"I'm calling on Sky to release the FAI from any contractual obligations," he said.

"I think the FAI signed this agreement because they thought that it was in the best interest of the game. Clearly Sky made the agreement on the basis that they were going to increase their subscriptions.

"But I think the big loser in all this is the Irish football supporters, who've consistently shown support for the Irish football team down through the years."

He continued: "I'm calling on Sky, even at this late stage, in their own interests, and in the interests of fair play to Irish fans, to release the FAI from their contractual obligations."
