TDs spend less than 40% of their time on legislative work, according to a new survey published today.
A study of 74 TDs carried out by the Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution shows that 53% of their time is spent dealing with constituency-based work.
Just 38% is spent dealing with legislation and 9% is spent on other activities such as work for voluntary organisations, party and media work.
The study found that most constituency work involved lobbying on behalf of constituents, delivering leaflets and carrying out visits.
Overall 43% of respondents were in favour of changing the current electoral system.
