Man drowns in west Cork

A man in his 20s is the latest person to have drowned during the current heatwave.

The incident occurred off the west Cork coast after the man was reported missing last night.

The Castletownbere RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew, the Coast Guard Rescue 115 helicopter and the Derrynane inshore rescue were involved in the operation.

The man’s body was recovered at about 2.30pm in the sea a mile and a half off Travarra on the Beara peninsula.

Paul Stevens, Castletownbere RNLI deputy coxswain, said: “This is a terrible tragedy and we extend our sympathies to the young man’s family and friends.”

More than 10 people have drowned over the past two weeks during the heatwave.
