A man who pulled another male back from entering the River Shannon in Limerick tonight has been hailed "a hero".
The man in his 20s was passing along Harvey's Quay around 6.20pm when he spotted the other male, also in his 20s, attempting to enter the river.
The passer by pulled the man back from the brink, and held him until emergency services arrived.
A source said: "He's a hero. He did a great job holding onto the man until the emergency services arrived."
"Limerick Fire and Rescue Service launched their rescue boat 'FireSwift' within four minutes of receiving the call, however its services weren't required," said a source.
"Ground crews of the Fire Service assisted HSE paramedics and gardaí with attending to the man who tried to enter the river," they added.
The man was transported from the scene by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where he is being assessed.
