Fossil fuels 'largely gone by 2050'

Fossil fuels will be largely gone from energy production in Ireland by 2050.

However, the Energy Minister Alex White admitted it could be the end of the century before we become a completely carbon free country, using only renewable sources.

Minister White published a discussion document saying we would have to change the way we live over the coming decades.

He said there would have to be a complete change of culture from people.

"We will only achieve this ambitious degree of de-carbonisation by engaging all citizens in energy policy and its implementation," he said.

"Meeting the challenge of global warning can no longer be confined to the realm of international treaties or government decisions. It's about changing how we heat our homes and businesses. It's about reassessing how we travel."
