Labour says judges not to blame for low conviction rates

Blaming judges for the low rates of conviction in our courts is a side-show to the real difficulties facing the Government, according to Labour leader Pat Rabbitte.

Blaming judges for the low rates of conviction in our courts is a side-show to the real difficulties facing the Government, according to Labour leader Pat Rabbitte.

He was commenting on the recent remarks of Minister for Justice who implied that members of the judiciary could be more strict in their interpretation of the bail laws when it comes to releasing suspects.

Rabbitte has accused Michael Mc Dowell of pointing the finger of blame at judges when he is himself to blame for the poor management of his own Department:

He said blaming the judiciary was a “diversion by the Minister for Justice from his own failure”.

“If you look at the falling detection rates for serious crime, the real issue is detection rates, not the conduct of judges,” he said.
