SIPTU has slammed the treatment of migrant workers by the owners of a mushroom farm in Co Cavan.

The union said today that the eight Lithuanian women working for Kilnaleck Mushrooms had been fired on Monday despite paying €500 to a Lithuanian agency to find them steady jobs.

The women had only been hired in January following the sacking of the company's previous workforce.

SIPTU said they had been forced to work up to 100 hours per week for very little pay.

Kilnaleck Mushrooms claims the dismissals were due to the company changing hands.
